ISHPEMING — Ishpeming’s Gossard Building dates back to the late-19th century and has seen several different owners and businesses call the Cleveland Avenue building home over the years.
Originally built in 1888, the Brastad-Gossard building, as it was then known, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
The large structure was home to a general store in the early-1900s and it remained in operation until it was purchased by the city of Ishpeming in 1920 in an attempt to lure new businesses to the area.
hortly after, H.W. Gossard, a producer of women’s undergarments, moved into the building.
The company stayed in the building for several years, operating all throughout the Great Depression, employing as many as 600 people.
