Breakwater light

MARQUETTE — The Marquette area has no shortage of historic maritime landmarks and one of its most iconic is the Presque Isle Harbor Breakwater Light.

During a five year stretch from 1897 to 1902, the United States Army Corps of Engineers worked on the construction of a 1,200-foot breakwater jutting out from Presque Isle.

After adding an additional 1,600-feet to the breakwater in the 1930s, plans for a lighthouse came shortly after and in 1938 the United States Lighthouse Service began work on building an automated lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.

The 55-foot-tall lighthouse has played a part in helping ships safely navigate the Marquette harbor since its completion in 1941.

The lighthouse is three stories of steel on top of a octogonal base with an iconic red section in middle of the structure.

The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
