ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools officials are urging parents and guardians to speak to their students about the serious nature of making threats after law enforcement officials were called to assist with an investigation into a voicemail left by a student with APS Central Office on Tuesday.
In a press release, the district said a voicemail was received by Central Office staff on Tuesday morning from a young caller, who told staff he was a parent and that his “son” brought a firearm to school and was bringing ammunition to intimidate someone.
The caller also told staff there were guns in their home.
Officials used caller ID to trace the origin of the call and the student responsible for making the call. The student, who the press release said was in elementary school, had their belongings confiscated and searched and was interviewed by troopers from the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post.
The student was removed from the building pending further action by law enforcement and the district. The district did not specify which school the student attends or was removed from.
The student’s home was also searched by law enforcement officials, with parent permission, to determine if the student had access to firearms.
“Students should know that they should never discuss weapons, explosives, attacks, and so on while in school regardless of their intent,” the district said in the release. “It is the responsibility of each one of us to stop these threats now. The school district and law enforcement WILL take each threat with the utmost seriousness. Law enforcement guides our decisions on every threat of violence. The district WILL discipline children to the fullest extent allowable by Board of Education policy, which means up to and including expulsion.”
