30 years ago ALUMET – Built at the turn of the century, the Calumet Theatre is one of the few remaining landmarks of the cultural and entertainment scene during the heyday of copper mining in Keweenaw. The theater has undergone numerous renovations and remodelings since it was built, all in hopes of bringing it back to its original look. 30 years ago NEGAUNEE – A dream to build a motel-convention center and condominiums along the shores of Teal Lake was brought to the Negaunee City Council Thursday night by Ishpeming City Manager John Korhonen. Armed with an aerial map of the southwest shore of the lake, Korhonen told the Negaunee City Council that the two cities should work together to make infrastructure improvements that would attract potential developers. 30 years ago May 14th, 1995 – MARQUETTE – A new book by Beverly Matherne, a noted Cajun poet and English professor at Northern Michigan University, will be released this month in New York City. The book, “La Grande Points,” is being released in a limited edition as a feature of International Poets and Writers Literary Arts Week in New York. Matherne’s book is the third in a series of books by noted Cajun poets to be published by Cross-Cultural Communications of Merrick, N.Y. and she and the two other poets will be featured in the book tour/festival.
