30 years ago MARQUETTE – The Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society is looking for volunteers to participate in the Fourth Annual International Migratory Bird Day, May 13, by counting birds for local census efforts in either Marquette or Alger counties. Birdwatchers can volunteer to count portions of either two counties, including backyard bird feeders. They can count for as long, or as little, as they’d like, keeping track of their time, area counted, species of bird seen, and bird numbers. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – A diamond and opal gold pin designed by Thomas Kemp and Linda Wilson of Wattsson & Wattsson Jewelers Inc. won the new “Spectral Award” at the Michigan Jewelers Association 7th Annual Design Competition. The award is sponsored by Spectral Gems of Birmingham. 30 years ago ESCANABA – What once housed thousands of books will soon house a family. The Escanaba City Council has approved sale of the Carnegie Library for $63,813 to Paul and Marcia Neumeier of Gladstone. The Escanaba Public Library will leave the facility this fall and move to the new city hall/library complex on Ludington Street. The Neumeiers plan to convert the building into a private residence.
