IRON MOUNTAIN – The Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association is once again issuing “passports” to people interested in traveling to the Upper Peninsula. It’s the sixth year for the passports, which come in the form of a booklet that lists six areas of discovery, or Heritage Pathways, in the Upper Peninsula. These include public lands and historic places, and pathways to the region’s iron, copper, lumbering, and maritime heritage. As tourists visit different sites listed in the passport, they can obtain validation stamps, which if they add up to 25 in a year, could win the bearer a seven night lodging package in a return trip to the U.P.

ISLE ROYALE – The success of the experiment of live trapping moose on Isle Royale for transfer to the mainland makes it logical to assume that moose trapping will be tried on a larger scale next winter. “The state conservation department’s game men brought to a successful conclusion their experiment in moose ‘management’ undertaken on Isle Royale last winter. The results probably even exceeded the department’s hopes,” says Ben East, outdoor editor for the Grand Rapids Press. A total of 18 moose were trapped, of which two escaped and five were released from the corral deliberately because of limited space and because the state’s two-man crew on the island could not feed a greater number of animals.
