MARQUETTE — After the passing of a new state school spending bill, time students spend on the school bus could count as instruction time. Mandatory hours of instruction have raised since 1994, and if schools fail to meet the requirements, they will face losing state aid. Some U.P. educators see the busing solution as an adequate consideration. Others are considering the U.P.’s geographically large districts, and the instructors feel that students would be cheated out of an education for simply living in a rural area that takes longer to ride to and from school. Negaunee School District Superintendent Don Mourand says that the alternatives to counting riding time would be to either “eliminate student participation in off campus courses or lose a portion of school funding as a penalty.”

MARQUETTE — The west section of the city, the so called “Brewery Location,” is seeing major construction on a water main and sewer line project which will provide utility and service to the area. L.W. Brumm Construction Co. is leading the project after they received the contract in a low bid of $118,902.50 from the city. The Brumm crew began their work near the pre-existing line at McMillan St., off of W. Washington, and the construction work is projected to halt on August 31st. City Engineer M.J. Keranen anticipates a portion of the project connected to the Four Seasons Bowling Lane finished sooner in order for the new building to open.
