30 years ago SKANDIA — A class project in Skandia has turned into a yearly tradition known as the “Skandia School 5th Grade Free Press.” This student run press contains everything from interviewing and writing stories, selling and designing advertisements to local businesses, and payroll accounting that includes standard tax deductions. Carol Lamirand, teacher of the fifth grade class, began using newspapers in the classroom around three years ago as a tool to combat illiteracy. 30 years ago PALMER — A $1,600 fine was doled out to the owners of the Empire Mine for safety violations after one of their truck drivers was critically injured. The Empire Mining Partnership will also be paying a $1,000 fine for failing to address the 170-ton trucks signs of instability, as well as $500 added to their bill as the seat belt in the truck was not properly installed. 30 years ago IRON MOUNTAIN – The Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association is once again issuing “passports” to people interested in traveling to the Upper Peninsula. It’s the sixth year for the passports, which come in the form of a booklet that lists six areas of discovery, or Heritage Pathways, in the Upper Peninsula. These include public lands and historic places, and pathways to the region’s iron, copper, lumbering, and maritime heritage. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – The ice sheet at Northern Michigan University’s physical Education Instructional Facility may grow to Olympic proportions this fall an NMU official said today.
