30 years ago June 21, 1995 — MARQUETTE- Carmen, a bear who enjoys foraging in the central Upper Peninsula forests, will don a new $7,000 GPS collar and will be tracked from space this summer. Michigan has between 6,000 and 10,000 bears, and Carmen will be the first globally tracked bear in the U.S. Department of Natural Resources researcher John Hendrickson, chief U.P. wildlife biologist, claims that bear tracking is difficult as they have a “wide” and “footloose” roaming pattern, which can cause trouble with counting and drafting hunting regulations for the species. 30 years ago ESCANABA — A passing motorist, Darryl Fudala, saved the life of an Escanaba driver, Jody Williams, by pulling him through the window of his burning car after colliding with a train. Williams does not remember how the accident occurred, but pieces of the story have been put together by officials involved. Williams had been driving on K Road when he hit the engine of a 32 car iron ore train. As K Road has no lights or cantilever arms to warn motorists of trains, Williams hit the lead engine at 50 miles per hour, careening into a ditch after which the car burst into flames. ...

30 years ago MUNISING — Participants in a Forest Service workshop in Munising said they’re ready for officials to begin various projects related to the Grand Island Management Plan. The foresters plan to spend $80,000 on routine maintenance and $55,000 on improvements from now until the fall. Part of the work would go to fixing an impassable bridge at the end of the island, hire a ranger, designate a road system, remove hazardous materials, stabilize historic buildings, and convert a garage into a temporary visitor’s center. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The NICE school district will be voting to approve a $9.8 million building millage budget this fall for a new K-8 school that will replace all existing buildings safe for Westwood High School. The new building plan was developed by a 31-member citizen committee that studied the districts long term building needs. If approved, voters will be paying off the millage for the next seven years, and experts see the new school offering more development plans for the city. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — The future of Michigan gambling is under fire, and many charity bingo games are worried they will be pushed out. Bingo attendance has dropped an 11% across the state from 1992-1994 which the organizers blame on the rise of casinos on indigenous land. Betty Pope, who runs the Saturday night bingo games for Child and Family services in the U.P. claims that she has lost 50 players due in part to the casinos and the closing of the Sawyer Air Force Base. Mandatory hours of instruction have raised since 1994, and if schools fail to meet the requirements, they will face losing state aid. Some U.P. educators see the busing solution as an adequate consideration. Others are considering the U.P.’s geographically large districts, and the instructors feel that students would be cheated out of an education for simply living in a rural area that takes longer to ride to and from school. ...
