Wildcats announce 2018-19 swimming and diving schedules

NMU to host five meets at the PEIF, including one with Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay

MARQUETTE — After a solid 2017-18 season, the Northern Michigan University swimming and diving teams recently announced their schedules for the upcoming year.

The Wildcats will compete in 14 meets over the course of the season, five of which will take place at the PEIF Pool.

The year begins on Sept. 22 with two different events at different locations. The CSCAA Open Water Championships will take place in Lawrence, Kansas, while the Green and Gold Meet will occur at the PEIF.

NMU then travels to Ohio to take on Findlay on Oct. 5 and it will then compete in a triangular meet with the Oilers and Bowling Green State the next day.

The Wildcats return home the following weekend to face St. Cloud State and Northern State (S.D.) at the PEIF. Northern will host one more meet before the semester break when it takes on Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State on Nov. 3.

NMU will hold two more meets in the second semester as Wisconsin-Green Bay comes to town Jan. 12 and then the Wildcats will hold their intrasquad and skins meet Jan. 19.

The GLIAC Championships are set for Feb. 20-23 in Cleveland and the NCAA Division II Championships will take place Mar. 12-16 in Indianapolis.

Last year, sophomore Rachel Helm led the Wildcats by earning her second national title, this time in the 200-yard backstroke. That championship was one of her five combined All-American or Honorary All-American awards, while junior Ryan Leonard had four honors and fellow juniors Regan Kilburn and Renars Bunzis along with sophomore Lajos Budai were named All-American or Honorable Mention in three events. All in all, Northern finished with 29 awards.

The women’s team also finished 16th at the NCAA Championships, its best finish since 2013-14 and its second best since 2000-01. The men’s team took 18th place and finished second at the GLIAC Championships.
