MARQUETTE — Three Northern Michigan University swimmers joined an elite group of NCAA Division II swimmers and divers nationwide after being named to Academic All-America teams by the College Sports Communicators this week.

William LaCount of the Wildcat men’s team and Camilla Carbone and Zoe DeKievit of the NMU women’s team earned those honors. LaCount made the CSC men’s Second Team list, while Carbone was on the women’s Second Team and DeKievit on the women’s Third Team.

The program recognizes student-athletes at four levels — all three levels of the NCAA plus the NAIA — for combining excellence in athletics and academics.

LaCount, of West Lafayette, Indiana, is a sophomore who has a 3.94 grade-point average as an undeclared major.

He earned a pair of All-American awards at the NCAA Division II Championships held in Geneva, Ohio, from March 12-16 — a First Team honor while swimming with Northern’s 400-yard medley relay and Second Team All-America in NMU’s 200 freestyle relay, each quartet breaking the school record.

LaCount also posted individual NCAA Championships qualifying times in the 50 and 100 free, and at the GLIAC Championships a few weeks before the NCAAs, he was runner-up in the 50 free and 200 free relay, third in the 100 free and fourth in the 400 free relay. During the regular season, he won nine events.

Among the 31 men’s honorees for Academic All-America, he had the seventh-highest GPA.

Two other GLIAC men’s swimmers also earned this Academic All-American award — Trevor Jones of Wayne State was named to the First Team and Owen Stender of Davenport made the Third Team.

Carbone, of Rovellasca, Italy, is a junior with a 3.98 GPA in marketing who was one of two Wildcats athletes to be honored with a GLIAC Commissioner’s Award last week, the other being Makaylee Kuhn of the women’s basketball squad.

Carbone was a three-time All-American at the NCAA D-II Championships, taking away a First Team honor in the 100 backstroke and joining three teammates on the 200 medley relay, then winning Second Team in the 400 medley relay.

She also posted NCAA qualifying times in the 100 and 200 back, was crowned a conference champ at the GLIAC Championships in both the 100 back and 200 medley relay, and posted seven event victories during the rest of the season while being named a GLIAC Female Swimmer of the Week on one occasion.

DeKievit, of downstate Holland, is a sophomore who was one of nine among the 33 women’s honorees to post a perfect 4.00 GPA. DeKievit majors in secondary education and health and fitness.

She was a two-time All-American at the NCAAs, First Team in the 200 medley relay and Second Team in the 400 medley relay.

DeKievit posted NCAA “B” qualifying times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 100 butterfly while being crowned a GLIAC champion at the conference finals in the 100 back and 200 medley relay. She posted 10 other wins during the season.

Three other GLIAC women’s swimmers also earned Academic All-American status, all from Wayne State — Jordan Fox and Mikaela Senkus on the First Team and Alli Vassilakos on the Third Team.
