Working in the off-season, too: Current, future Wildcats attend NHL development camps

MARQUETTE — Three current and future Northern Michigan University hockey players are attending NHL development camps this week.
Current Wildcats defenseman Warren Clark and goaltender Oliver Auyeung-Ashton, along with future commitment Salvatore Viviano, are are three separate camps in the National Hockey League.
• Clark, who will be a senior at NMU this fall, was a sixth-round draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2023 and is returning to a Lightning development camp this summer.
On-ice workouts began Monday and were to conclude with the camp’s annual 3-on-3 tournament today and Friday.
Those games will be streamed live on the Lightning App and air on The Spot Tampa Bay 66, the NHL team’s TV home.

The Lightning’s development camp showcases both top prospects and recent NHL draftees, invitees and others.
Clark played in 33 of Northern’s 34 games last season, recording two goals and four assists for six points, a game-winning goal and 20 blocked shots while averaging about 16 minutes per game.
The Riverside, Ontario, native transferred from St. Cloud State last summer.
• Auyeung-Ashton was the Wildcats’ freshman sensation in goal last season, posting a .930 saves percentage and 2.67 goals-against average while playing in 18 games.
The Coquitlam, British Columbia, native was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, college’s hockey MVP, and the Mike Richter Award, given to the top college hockey goaltender.
Auyeung-Ashton was also a finalist for the CCHA Rookie of the Year and did earn a spot on the CCHA Rookie Team.
Though not an NHL draft pick, Auyeung-Ashton was invited by the Calgary Flames to their development camp that began Wednesday at WinSport arena in Calgary.
Its purpose is listed as a chance to enhance each player’s development process through direction on conditioning and familiarity with the Flames’ organization.
He is one of four goaltenders among the 25 players attending, with goalie sessions Wednesday and today and the Snowy Cup 3-on-3 games on Friday morning.
• Viviano, an 18-year-old forward from downstate Grand Blanc, is set for the Detroit Red Wings Development Camp.
He played for the Waterloo, Iowa, Black Hawks of the U.S. Hockey League last season, when he had 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 61 games, leading his team in assists and No. 2 in goals and points.
He’s played AAA minor hockey, including stints with Bigby Coffee 18U, Compuware 16U and 15U, Victory Honda 14U and Belle Tire 13U.
The Red Wings’ camp opened at Little Caesars Arena Monday and runs through today, featuring on-ice skill development and off-ice workouts each day.
