MSHS’ Rambo, Negaunee’s Johnson among scholarship recipients

HARRIS — Four Upper Peninsula senior student-athletes, including two from Marquette County, are receiving scholarships from the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame during its induction banquet on Saturday at the Island Resort & Casino.
The area recipients chosen to receive scholarships by the committee are Luke Rambo of Marquette and Clara Johnson of Negaunee.
The other two are Laura Lyons of Lake Linden-Hubbell and Jake Witt of Ewen-Trout Creek.
Rambo has a 4.2 grade-point average and scored 1,330 on his SAT test.
He’ll graduate with 10 varsity letters in cross country, nordic skiing and track, receiving all-state honors in all three sports for the past three years.
Rambo owns his own landscaping business and recently earned the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He’s also active in church and ski club fundraisers.
In his essay, Rambo mentioned sports leadership and determination have become his closest allies.
Rambo will attend Michigan State University where he plans to run on the cross country team and major in political science.
Johnson has a 4.23 GPA and will graduate with 12 varsity letters in basketball, cross country and track and field. She holds school records in cross country and the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in track.
In basketball, she received Class C state honorable mention and was a member of the 2016-17 Miners’ district championship team.
In her essay, Johnson said she learned from failure and has been humbled by success.
She plans to play basketball at Michigan Tech and major in physical therapy.
Lyons carries a 4.0 GPA and is valedictorian of her class.
She’ll graduate with 15 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, track and softball.
Lyons earned U.P. Division 3 all-state honors all four years of track in multiple events. She also received numerous awards in student council, National Honor Society and High School Bowl. She’s also active in Girl Scouts and her church groups.
In her eassy, Lyons says academics and athletics have led her to focus on health. She plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering at Tech.
Witt carries a 3.7 GPA and is valedictorian of his class.
He’ll graduate with 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Witt has received all-state honors in eight-player football and in basketball, which he was named Class D all-state captain this year.
He’s active in assisting with church services and makes time to talk with first-graders and with much older people at grocery stores.
In his eassy, Witt mentioned it’s important to be a teammate to all to make sure everybody is successful.
Witt plans to continue his basketball career at Michigan Tech and major in natural resources management.
