8 from Marquette earn GNC baseball honors
The Marquette Senior High School varsity baseball team included 16 players on its season-opening roster. MARQUETTE — Eight players from Marquette earned Great Northern Conference honors in high school baseball as voted on recently by coaches in the league.
The Sentinels, who finished at 14-14 after a late-season, seven-game winning streak, won their MHSAA Division 1 district tournament opener over Alpena before falling to Traverse Central Central in the championship game on Saturday.
Three Marquette players earned a spot on the GNC Dream Team, the trio earning “Gold Glove” status specifically for their defensive skills.
They are senior pitcher Alex Brennan, sophomore infielder Wesley Robinson and sophomore outfielder Evan Brown.
Three more Sentinels made the GNC Second Team, senior infielder Desmond Gleason, sophomore infielder Easton Jezewski and junior catcher Jack Keough.
And a pair of MSHS players earned Honorable Mention, junior Jacob Geller and Jameson Sandstrom.
Escanaba won a majority of the special awards — the Eskymos were named GNC Team of the Year, while Scott Hanson and his staff earned Coach of the Year. Additionally, EHS senior Lennox Peacock was named Pitcher of the Year, while Escanaba junior Mikaiden Hughes shared the GNC Player of the Year honor with Kingsford senior Jack Kriegl.
