Wildcat pair ready for NCAA finals

MARQUETTE – Two Northern Michigan University athletes will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Samanthia Johnson and Ine Mylle are representing the Wildcats at the meet with Johnson competing in the discus and Mylle in the triple jump.

Johnson qualified for the nationals for the second straight year thanks to her strong performance at the Grand Valley State Last Chance meet on May 14. She is 11th in the nation in her event.

Last year, Johnson set a school record with a throw of 159 feet, 2 inches, which helped her finish eighth and earn All-American status.

Mylle earned a gold medal at the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 6. She finished with a jump of 39-9.25 and is tied for 21st in the nation.

During the indoor season, she was the only NMU track athlete to earn an All-Midwest Region award from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She also finished first at the Northern Challenge on Jan. 30 with a leap of 38-6.25.

At the GLIAC Indoor Championships in February, Mylle finished fourth overall with a jump of 37-11.5.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held in Bradenton, Florida, at IMG Academy. The meet will be streamed live at the website NCAA.com.

Mylle is scheduled to compete at 4:45 p.m., with Johnson at 5 p.m.
