Torchia named CCSA’s top skier

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s Ian Torchia received his second Skier of the Week award this season from the Central Collegiate Ski Association after leading the Wildcat men to its league title over the weekend.

On Sunday, Torchia won the 10-kilometer freestyle cross country event to lead Northern to a 1-2-3 podium sweep. Torchia clocked 20 minutes, 11.8 seconds to win that title after finishing runner-up the day before in the 10K mass start race in 36:59.1.

The CCSA Championships were contested during the Mayor’s Cross Country Challenge, which Torchia also won in the 10K freestyle, topping a club-affiliated skier by nearly four seconds. The nearest CCSA-affiliated skier finished 28 seconds behind the NMU sophomore.

Torchia also captured CCSA Skier of the Week accolades after his performance at the CCSA Invitational Jan. 30-31.

Next up for Torchia is the 2016 World Junior Ski Championship, set to start Thursday and run through Feb. 29 in Rasnov, Romania. He is one of five NMU skiers to make the U.S. team.

Northern is set to host the NCAA Central Regional Championships Saturday and Sunday in Ishpeming.
