OTS wrestlers earn medals

MARQUETTE – A pair of Greco-Roman wrestlers from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site picked up silver medals Thursday at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In the 59-kilogram (130.1-pound) gold-medal final, NMU’s Sam Jones faced No. 3-ranked Jermaine Hodge of the U.S. Army team. Jones defeated Hodge in their last two meetings, but lost by a fall at 5:36 Thursday.

On Jones’ way to earning silver, he faced Max Nowry of the U.S. Army team in the semifinals, winning 7-2. Nowry, an NMU alumnus, was able to work his way through the repechage bracket and placed third in the tournament.

Alejandro Sancho also placed second for the NMU squad. In the 66-kg (145.5-lb.) final match, he met Ravaughn Perkins of team Ready RP National. Sancho dropped a close match, 3-0.

On his way to the final match, Sancho defeated Dylan Ness of the Minnesota Storm in a back-and-forth semifinal match that ended with Sancho scoring a 9-5 win in the final seconds.
