NMU golfer 2nd in tourney
MARQUETTE – With Martin Eliasson placing second, the Northern Michigan University men’s golf team captured third place in the GLIAC North Invitational that concluded Monday.
A freshman, Eliasson carded at 1-over-par 139 (66-73) at the HawksHead Links in downstate South Haven.
The Wildcats finished with a two-day 593 total behind winner
Grand Valley State (581) and runner-up Malone (583).
“Overall, this was another good tournament for us,” NMU head coach Kyle Wittenbach said. “Martin really stepped up and helped the team in a big way.”
Individually, NMU’s Austin Elsner (76-75-151) and Cyril Botha (77-74-147) tied for 31st. In addition, Dustin Dishaw (72-80-152) tied for 35th, while Aaron Cheong (85-83-168) placed 89th.
Malone’s Jake Troyer edged Eliasson by two strokes to win the individual title, shooting a 137 (68-69). Grand Valley State’s Domenic Mancinelli (72-69-141) came in third.
The Wildcats return to action on Monday when they compete at the Great Lakes Midwest Regional at Harborside International in Calumet City, Illinois.
