NMU track & field takes third

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University track & field team wrapped up action at the Al Owens Classic Saturday at Grand Valley State.

The Wildcats finished third out of 18 teams with 68 points.

“We continued to see good efforts into the second day at the Al Owens Classic,” said NMU head coach Jenny Ryan.

“Many of our athletes had season best performances. It is exciting to see the team recording this type of results as we prepare for the GLIAC Championships.”

NMU freshman Kameron Burmeister won the women’s 5K finishing the race in a time of 17:39.69. Senior Larissa Halonen was fifth at 18:26.85.

Freshman Samanthia Johnson and sophomore Jasmine Williams finished second and third respectively in the discus throw, both provisionally qualifying in the event. Johnson recorded a throw of 46.91m while Williams reached 45.25m.

NMU senior Brittni Wirtz finished fourth in the 100 meter dash clocking a 12.16 while senior Avadon James was fifth running the race in 12.17.

James also paced sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.32.

Junior Danielle Brzezinski placed seventh in the 400 meter dash clocking a 1:00.31.

Sophomore Shannon Flynn finished third in the women’s 3K steeplechase clocking a 11:51.48 while freshman Kate Thayer was sixth at 12:12.16.
