Lawrence sets NMU swim mark

ALLENDALE – Northern Michigan University senior Debbi Lawrence turned in an impressive performance Wednesday at the first day of the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

She set an NMU record by winning the 50-yard freestyle at downstate Allendale. Lawrence swam it in 22.95 seconds, making the NCAA Division II A cut.

The Wildcats are third out of 10 teams with 113 points.

The Wildcats also had three swimmers score in the 1,000 free, led by sophomore Rachel Borchardt in third place in 10:23.27. Senior Tara Dowling of Marquette finished fourth in 10:28.81 and senior Jordan Iverson fifth in 10:30.68.

All three times are NCAA Division II B cuts.

NMU senior Madisen Sechena scored points by placing fifth for the Wildcats in the 200 individual medley, clocking 2:06.59, an NCAA Division II B cut.

Lawrence, Sechena, junior Crystal Bennet and senior Emily Bourguignon placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.34. That scored 34 points for NMU and was an NCAA Division II B cut.
