NMU swimmers rule at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS – Northern Michigan University’s women’s swimming and diving team won both events it competed in during the opening night of the Calvin College Invitational on Thursday in Grand Rapids.

The Wildcats top the competition with 118 points. Grand Valley State finished the day in second with 113 points, while Valparaiso was third with 63 as action continues today.

Senior Debbi Lawrence, junior Crystal Bennet, sophomore Rachel Borchardt and senior Tara Dowling of Marquette teamed up to win the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 7 minutes, 31.20 seconds.

Borchardt then picked up another victory in the 1,650 free in 17:05.32.

Northern senior Jordan Iverson finished fourth with a time of 17:44.73; Dowling was fifth in 17:52.49.
