The Garrow Accounting cooperative girls hockey team finished as runner-up at the 14-Under Girls Tier III state tournament held over three days last weekend in Grand Rapids. This team included a pair of players from Iron Range Hockey of Negaunee and Ishpeming, Oni Heinzel and Aili Nelson, along with players from the Calumet, Copper Country and L’Anse hockey associations. This Upper Peninsula team compiled a 3-1-1 record while only allowing three goals in total. Garrow Accounting advanced to the state championship game, where the Detroit Bulldogs prevailed by a narrow 2-1 score. Garrow opened with a 1-0 win over Bigby Coffee as Beth Garrow had the only goal shorthanded and Heinzel posted the shutout in goal. Its second game was also a 1-0 victory over the Metro Jets as Ella Schneiderhan scored and Heinzel again posted the shutout. Game 3 was a 1-1 tie vs. the Detroit Buldogs as Schneiderhan again scored the U.P. goal, while the semifinals Game 4 was a 4-0 victory over the Livonia Knights with Schneiderhan getting two goals with one each by Nelson and Harper Haataja as Heinzel posted her third shutout of the event. In the championship rematch vs. the Detroit Bulldogs, Detroit opened with an early, back-door goal before Schneiderhan tied it, where it remained until a Bulldogs’ breakaway goal in the final three minutes sewed up the result.
