Miner girls win Kingsford Invite

KINGSFORD — The Negaunee High School girls’ track team ran by the competition at Thursday’s 2023 Kingsford Invite, scoring 127.5 points.

Ishpeming was second with 88, followed by Iron Mountain witih 45. Rounding out the field were Westwood with 44.5 and the host Flivvers with 37.

On the boys’ side, Kingsford was victorious, scoring 131 points. Negaunee was second with 105. Iron Mountain and Ishpeming each tallied 56, with Westwood scoring 3 points.

The Negaunee girls won three of the four relays, with Iron Mountain triumphing in the 400.

Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi and Westwood’s Faith Spiroff each won three events — Korpi the 1600 run, the 800 run and the 3200 run with Spiroff victorious in the 400 dash, high jump and long jump.

Negaunee had two double winners: Eliana Juchemich in the shot put and discus and Madison Pekrul in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

The Negaunee boys took the 1600 relay and the Miners Judge Anderson captured three events: the 1600 run, the 800 run and the 3200 run.

Teammate Nico Lukkarainen won the shotput.

“I am impressed with the improvements that our athletes are making,” said Negaunee girls’ coach Vickie Paupore. “Eliana Juchemich won both the shot put and discus and is getting close to the school record in the shot put. Madison Pekrul won both hurdle events and has been working hard on her technique. Judge Anderson had an impressive performance winning all three distance events for the boys.

“Overall it was a good day for our teams. We are getting into the championship portion of our season and are making the progress that we need to be successful.”
