ISHPEMING — In one of the first tennis matches of the season, Marquette Senior High School’s varsity boys beat Westwood’s 7-1.

Winning the singles for MSHS were Matt Barsch (6-3, 6-4), Chase Thomsen (6-1, 6-2), Seppi Camilli (6-1, 6-0) and Elan Chu (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

As for the doubles, the Marquette Redmen claiming victory are as follows: Keaton Ansell and Isaac Johnson (6-3, 6-3), Holden Hulter and Bodhi White (6-3, 6-2) along with Abe Kentala and Connor Stade (6-3, 6-4).

“I think the boys were really happy to see somebody across the net from them that isn’t in their biology class. As far as the play on the court, it was a typical first meet of the year. Some rust and nerves, but a lot of good shot making from both teams,” said Marquette coach Karl Thomsen.

The Westwood Patriots’ winning athletes through all matches were Mitchell Ford and Jaxson Alderton (6-4, 6-4).

“Both of them have really improved in the last year and their games seem to compliment one another,” said Westwood coach Sarah Massie on her two winners.

Although Ford and Alderton were able to secure their victory in two sets, the team as a whole will have to go through some adjustments to ensure the rest of the season is smooth sailing.

Coach Massie isn’t discouraged by their first loss, stating, “We’ll continue to make some adjustments to our lineup as we get more matches and practices under our belt, but we’re looking forward to the season ahead. I’m happy to see the guys enjoying it so far.”

Marquette’s coach Thomsen similarly stated, “The season i

s about to start moving at the speed of light, so we’ll take a look at our notes from today’s matches and get back to work.”
