Carsyn Osterman helps Finlandia women’s basketball team win

HANCOCK — Led by Carsyn Osterman’s 15 points, four area players scored for Finlandia as its women’s basketball team defeated Wisconsin-River Falls 75-65 at the Paavo Nurmi Center on Saturday.

Osterman, a Lions sophomore from Baraga, made 6 of 8 free throws and dished out a game-high six assists. She also pulled down eight rebounds, sharing that game high with teammate Katie Lundeen, who led all scorers with 29 points. Osterman also made three steals and had a blocked shot.

Sophomore Mariah Austin of Ishpeming scored eight points, hitting 4 of 4 on free throws, to go with three rebounds in just 19 minutes of action.

Junior Bailey Froberg of L’Anse had seven points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Ishpeming sophomore Katie Loman contributed two points by making the only shot she attempted and getting two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The victory for Finlandia (5-7) avenged a 73-64 loss to the same UW-River Falls team exactly one week earlier at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Thanksgiving Classic.

The Lions play five games away from home to finish the calendar year before returning home to face Great Lakes Christian on Jan. 4. The road trip opens with a game in Watertown, Wisconsin, against Maranatha Baptist on Saturday, following by a pair of holiday tournaments in Orlando, Florida, and Superior, Wisconsin.
