Grzelak wins national ski title

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Aaron Grzelak of Marquette won the male overall title at the Eastern High School Championships downhill ski meet held at Attitash Mountain in Bartlett, New Hampshire in March.

This is listed as the nation’s most noted high school championship ski race as Grzelak and three fellow Marquette Senior High School skier were part of the 24-strong Team Michigan contingent at the meet. In all, nearly 250 skiers — 128 boys and 119 girls — from 11 states competed.

Grzelak won the slalom and was seventh in giant slalom for his overall championship, while Ainsley Kirk was fifth in slalom and seven in GS and Jacey Johnson was 14th in slalom and 21st in GS. Fellow Marquette skier Hayden Kauppila also participated.

Team Michigan won the female team title, while the male team was runner-up, missing the top spot by 15 points.

This marked just the second year that a Michigan team competed at the Eastern championships in its 39-year history.
