Congress advances in playoff

NEGAUNEE — Congress Pizza defeated the Negaunee Blasters 13-0 in a first-round playoff game in the Superiorland Baseball League on Monday night, advancing Congress to the semifinals.

The other two games scheduled for Monday were final games of the regular season. The 906 Sports Bar & Grill at Channing game was postponed because of rain, while the Marquette County Mavericks tied Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen 5-5 after nine innings in a game called due to darkness.

Coldwell plays a first-round playoff game against 906 Sports Bar & Grill at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Negaunee. The winner will join Congress and the top two teams that received byes, the Mavericks and Channing, for the semifinals and finals to be played in Channing on Saturday.

In the Mavs-Coldwell game on Monday, Paul Storm and Jay Daavettila each had three hits for Coldwell, while teammate John Daavettila had two and Dan L’Esperance a two-run homer. The Mavericks’ Jake Spear had two hits and two RBIs.

The Mavericks twice took the lead in the regulation, only to have Coldwell come back to tie it, including in the bottom of the seventh, then the Mavs scored a run in top of the ninth, again with Coldwell retying it in the bottom of the inning.

Steve Daavettila, Paul Storm and Jay Daavettila pitched for Coldwell while Preston Hutchens and Steve Hintsala shared duties for the Mavs.
