Munising, Newberry L’Anse triumph

MENOMINEE – Thomas Hyde gave the Munising High School football team a lift when it needed it the most Friday night.

Hyde rushed for 234 yards on 46 carries and scored three touchdowns – all in the second half – to lead the Mustangs to a 28-6 non-conference win over Algoma (Wis.) in a game played in Menominee.

Hyde scored on runs of six, eight and one yard as coach Jeff Seaberg’s Mustangs improved to 2-0 on the season.

“He did a great job,” Seaberg said. “He ran hard. We really weren’t going to run him 46 times, but that’s what (Algoma) was giving us.”

Munising forged a 6-6 tie at the half when Will Seymour scored on a 1-yard run.

“We were flat the first half,” Seaberg said. “I wasn’t happy with the defense, either.

“But we woke up to hold (Algoma) to 10-15 yards in the second half. We took the game over physically.”

Munising will next play at North Dickinson on Friday.

Newberry 47,

North Dickinson 36

At Newberry Friday night, junior quarterback John Paramski continued his strong play this season in leading the Indians to a Mid-Eastern Conference win over North Dickinson.

The junior quarterback rushed for 249 yards and scored five touchdowns as Newberry erased a 28-20 halftime deficit to improve to 2-0 this season, 1-0 in league play.

He scored on runs of three, 57, one, 20 and 87 while also completing 4 of 6 passes for 95 yards. Josh Hood caught three of those aerials for 57 yards.

Jeff Rahilly added 49 yards on the ground and a 7-yard TD run, while Hood contributed 74 yards rushing and a 66-yard TD run.

“We scored on every offensive possession, but we didn’t convert on many touchdowns and had a couple of turnovers that led to North Dickinson scores,” Newberry head coach Fred Bryant said.

Noah Berg led the Nordics (1-1, 0-1) offensively with 207 yards rushing on 20 attempts and three TDs. He also led his team in tackles with 10 from his safety position.
