NEGAUNEE — Negaunee came out on top for both the boys and girls teams at the annual WIN high school track and field meet held at Miners Stadium in Negaunee on Tuesday afternoon.

The meets, held in numerous sports, also include Marquette County west-end schools Ishpeming and Westwood, hence the “WIN” abbreviation.

The Negaunee girls were dominant, scoring 125 points to just 31 for Ishpeming and 17 for Westwood, while the Miners won a much closer boys meet with 76 points as the Hematites accumulated 67 and the Patriots had 14.

Negaunee girls coach Vickie Paupore was satisfied with her team’s performance.

“I think the girls did a fantastic job today,” she said. “I was really happy with a lot of the performances, particularly in field events.”

Paupore highlighted standout performances from Ashley Bell and Nori Korsman, who both were double winners in field events.

“We have some really speedy freshmen,” Paupore said. “Kiera Waterman had another great day in her sprint races.”

Miners boys coach Kyle Bell had similar sentiments in his meet.

“We had a pretty good meet,” he said. “Our sprinters and hurdlers did really well today.”

Including one relay win apiece, Negaunee’s Brady Mager and Kai Lacar accumulated seven wins between them, good for almost half their points — 35 in total.

“We had a lot of kids step up, showing senior and junior leadership,” Bell said.

All eyes now turn to the highly anticipated Lions Meet hosted by Negaunee at Miners Stadium on Friday starting at 3 p.m.

Kingsford, Escanaba, Gwinn, Ishpeming, Westwood, Marquette, Menominee, Negaunee, Houghton and L’Anse high schools are all expected.

Here are more details from each meet:
