Marquette boys tennis blows past WIC
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys tennis team played its second-to-last dual meet of the season at home on Wednesday, blanking West Iron County 8-0 and winning every match in two sets.
In fact, the Sentinels lost just 33 games over the eight matches, though a seventh win was needed to clinch the final set in two matches.
“Today was all about our seniors,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the results. “We have a great group of seniors that have put a lot of time and sweat in over their high school careers and I couldn’t be prouder of the young men they have become.”
Marquette’s two toughest wins came in singles, Dominic Camilli winning at the No. 1 flight 6-2, 7-5 over WIC’s Dominic Brunswick, and Connor Dunn coming through at No. 3 for a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory over the Wykons’ Nathan Camps.
The Sentinels coach was also pleased with his other players on this day, including the No. 1 doubles tandem of Elan Chu and Kane Bush, who worked through a 6-4, 6-3 win over WIC’s Matthew Swenski and Emmett Strom.
“Kane Bush and Elan Chu had great movement on the courts today,” Thomsen said. “The two of them read the play well out there today which allowed them to finish shots off at the net.”
And there was Billy Krebs at No. 2 singles, who took a 6-2, 6-3 win off of West Iron’s Donte White.
“Billy Krebs moved over to singles today and smoothed forehand after forehand,” Thomsen said. “He also showed off his doubles skills by capitalizing on his groundstrokes and finding the open court with his volleys.”
And he was also pleased with both No. 4 flights, which between them posted a trio of perfect 6-0 sets.
“Both of our No. 4 flights, the team of Nate Wood and Fred Talley on the doubles side and Wyatt Ansell in singles, played strong matches,” their coach said.
Marquette was also scheduled to host Negaunee on Thursday to wrap up both teams’ dual meet seasons. Each will be at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals in Division 1 at Westwood at 10 a.m. Wednesday, joining the host Patriots, Kingsford, Escanaba and Gladstone.
