Royalty on the GNC track: Sentinels claim solid victories in Escanaba

GLADSTONE — Marquette posted solid victories Monday on both the girls and boys sides at the Great Northern Conference meet in high school track and field, the final meet before the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals scheduled for Kingsford on Saturday, May 30.

The Marquette girls won their title by more than 50 points, scoring 149 to runner-up Gladstone’s 98. Kingsford was third with 53, while Escanaba had 30 and Menominee 18.

For the boys, the Sentinels produced 126 points to second-place Kingsford’s 98. The host Braves were third with 63, Escanaba had 41 and Menominee 25.

Here are details from each meet:

Girls meet

Marquette won 10 events, including nine of the 12 events on the track.

The Sentinels’ Jordyn Anthony was a four-time winner, taking the 100-meter dash in 13.20 seconds, the 200 in 26.56 and running with MSHS’s victorious 400 relay in 52.20 and 800 relay in 1:50.68.

Both those winning relays had the same four members, Anthony joined by Kiera Daugherty, Eva Nystrom and Taylen Todd.

Daugherty and teammate Ella Fure were both three-time victors. Daugherty added a win in the 400 in 1:05.91, while Fure came out on top in the 800 in 2:26.94 and 1,600 in 5:28.76, then ran with Marquette’s third winning relay, the 3,200, in 10:31.30 along with Ava Cantway, Amira Perrier and Emma Ziegler.

Ziegler also won the 3,200 in 12:10.11, a victory of more than 80 seconds, while Taylen Todd picked up the Sentinels’ lone victory in the field, winning the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches, a win by more than a foot and a half.

Marquette also had a half-dozen runner-up finishes, including Brynn Autio in the discus and shot put, the latter losing out by only 3 1/2 inches.

Also in second was Todd in the 100, Nystrom in the 200, Hailey Bolf in the 400 and Anja Holsworth in the 100 hurdles.

Boys meet

The Sentinels won eight events, all on the track, and came within one-thousandth of a second of winning a ninth.

In the longest individual race, the 3,200, Marquette’s Peter Argeropoulos came that close to catching winner Blake Tomasoski of Kingsford. The Flivvers’ runner clocked 10:21.758 while Argeropoulos timed 10:21.759.

Teammate Ford Richardson, however, was a four-time winner, taking the 100 in 11.41 seconds, the 200 in 23.11 and the 300 hurdles in 41.00. He also ran with the Sentinels’ victorious 1,600 relay in 3:38.74, a win by almost 15 seconds, joining teammates Connor Dunn, Beepsee Teeple and Lucas Ballard.

Dunn also won the 400 in 55.51, by a 0.15 of a second, Ballard took the 800 in 2:03.35, and Welly Fillmore claimed the 1,600 in 4:37.03.

And Fillmore ran with the Sentinels’ winning 3,200 relay in 9:03.17 along with William Lindsay, Garrett Crimmins and Jack Grant.

Along with Argeropoulos’ close call in the 3,200, Marquette had another four runner-up finishes. Teeple was second in the 800, Ballard in the 1,600, Thomas Matthews in the pole vault and Nathan Cattoor in the discus.
