MARQUETTE — A trio of Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s basketball players received regional recognition for their exploits during the college season that recently ended.

Men’s sophomore guard Max Weisbrod earned two awards — a berth on the All-Midwest Region First Team by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and a similar All-District First Team nod from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Teammate and fellow sophomore Dylan Kuehl earned a spot on the NABC All-District Second Team.

For Northern’s women’s team, senior Makaylee Kuhn was named to the D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Double-honoree Weisbrod was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year in men’s basketball earlier this month, a year after he earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

The point guard’s naming as the top conference player this season is just the fourth time a Wildcat man has earned Player of the Year and first time since Cory Brathol was honored in 2000.

Weisbrod, a native of DeForest, Wisconsin, finished fifth in GLIAC overall scoring at 17.2 points per game and second in assists with 4.4 per contest. He made 39.1% on 3-pointers (84 of 215) and 80.8% on free throws (105 of 130), while also having a 2.13 assist-to-turnover ratio to rate in the league’s top 20 while also in the top 25 in the nation for players with Weisbrod’s volume of assists.

In 15 conference games — he missed three games late in the regular season due to injury as NMU lost two of them — he was at 19.1 ppg, including 21.8 ppg over his final 11 games that helped the Wildcats clinch the GLIAC regular season title.

He scored in double digits 24 times, including a dozen games with at least 20 points, five with 25 points and a pair of contests with at least 30 points, including his career-high 35 points with seven 3-pointers in a 98-66 home win over Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech on Jan. 27.

He announced last week he was entering the NCAA transfer portal but that he only intended to transfer if it was to an NCAA Division I institution.

Kuehl, actually a redshirt sophomore who is from Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, was named to the GLIAC First Team and conference Defensive Team, each of those honors coming for the second straight season.

He was sixth in conference scoring at 16.2 ppg, while also second with 188 made shots in the regular season, fourth with 172 rebounds and fifth with 29 blocked shots. He also shot better than 50% from the field, 50.6% on 206 of 407 total shots.

Kuehl had four double-doubles, including his dominant 30-point, 10-rebound and six-block feat in a 71-56 home win over Saginaw Valley State on Dec. 9. He now has 11 career double-doubles.

In NMU’s GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal 71-63 win over Purdue Northwest, he had 27 points, while in two seasons and 65 games at Northern, he has 929 points, 416 rebounds, 119 assists and 69 blocked shots.

On the women’s side, Kuhn led Northern to a 22-10 record that included an NCAA Division II Midwest Region tournament 69-56 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan on March 15.

The Hilbert, Wisconsin, native was named to the GLIAC First Team for the fourth straight season and eclipsed the 2,000 career points mark in her final game. On Jan. 11, she broke the Wildcat program’s all-time scoring mark of 1,699 that had been held by Lisa (Jamula) Maki, who played for NMU from 1988-91.

In her senior season, Kuhn scored 535 points to finish third in GLIAC scoring at 16.7 ppg. She also had 207 rebounds, a 6.5-per-game average for seventh in the league, while also accumulating 77 assists, 29 steals and making 83.2% of her free throws (129 of 155).

She had eight double-doubles, including a season-high 30 points to go with 11 rebounds in an 81-66 home victory over Wayne State on Dec. 7.

In her career, she finished with 2,005 points, 802 rebounds, 329 assists, 120 steals and 33 blocks while shooting 43.8% from the field and 81.9% on free throws. She reached at least 20 points three dozen times and reached the 30-point barrier seven times with a career-high 39 points in a win over Purdue Northwest on Feb. 26, 2021.
