Northern Michigan University Wildcats’ women’s soccer team loses 4th straight game

MARQUETTE — After this season’s fast start with two wins at home, the Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team has hit a bit of a funk.

The Wildcats lost their fourth straight game with a 3-0 setback at undefeated Northwood on Sunday.

Three of the four losses have come on the road, with the fourth game a 4-0 loss to nationally No. 2 ranked Grand Valley State at home on Friday.

Northwood (6-0, 2-0 GLIAC) scored twice in the first half, the game-winner coming in the 14th minute when Juliana Paloetti scored her seventh goal this season.

She has more goals, points and shots taken than any other player in the GLIAC this season.

The only NMU player on those lists is Caroline Halonen, who is tied for second in shots with 25.

The Timberwolves made it 2-0 about nine minutes before halftime, though details on the goal scorer weren’t available on the Northern sports website, www.nmuwildcats.com.

Northwood rounded out the scoring in the 64th minute when Abigail Fowler notched her third of the season.

Despite the lack of scoring, NMU (2-4, 0-2) outshot their hosts in each half with a final edge of 13-10.

Wildcats’ goalkeeper Shanae Kreps made two saves while Northwood counterpart Jane Stinson had six saves.

NMU also had an edge in corner kicks, 5-4, with all five coming in the first half.

Halonen led Northern with six total shots, including three on goal, with Calihan Bearden, Gwen Kiilunen and Ashley Koch each with one total shot that was on goal.

NMU remains on the road for their next three games, starting at Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m. Friday.

The Wildcats’ next home game is against Wisconsin-Parkside at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8.
