Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team falls downstate, 2-1, at Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS — The men’s soccer team at Northern Michigan University fell to 0-2 after losing at Davenport 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Following a Panthers’ yellow card, Wildcats junior Kaffie Kurz took a free kick from the right side and kicked it over the heads of players defending in the box, bouncing it off the ground and past Davenport goalie Carter Selvius and into the left side of the net in the 32nd minute.

That tied the score 1-1 after Davenport (2-0) took its own penalty kick and scored in the game’s 10th minute.

The Panthers retook a 2-1 lead barely more than eight minutes after Kurz’s goal, getting a score from Matt Whelan for this third goal this season in just two matches.

Neither team scored in the second half.

Kurz led the Wildcats with three shots and his score was his only shot on goal. Teammates Ryan Palmbaum, Casey Miller and Markus Sandstad each had a shot, all being on goal.

In goal, NMU goalkeeper Alex Weaver made four saves.

NMU returns home to play Ashland in the Superior Dome at 1 p.m. Sunday.
