MARQUETTE — Negaunee and Marquette flip-flopped places not for the first time this season in the final Upper Peninsula high school basketball poll conducted by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Released today, the poll only included boys teams as girls basketball completed its district tournaments last week.

In this final boys poll, Negaunee moved back to No. 2 while Marquette went back to No. 3 in Divisions 1-3, even though the Redmen prevailed in their head-to-head matchup 61-54 on Feb. 20.

But the Miners got a big boost by slaying previously undefeated Iron Mountain 52-51 in its final regular season game on Thursday.

Meanwhile, MSHS also won its last game of the regular season on Feb. 29, 77-42 at Gaylord.

The Mountaineers didn’t have any problem holding onto the No. 1 spot as they have all season, continuing to be a unanimous pick at the top.

Munising also held onto the No. 5 slot it has been in for about a month.

Dollar Bay also remained a unanimous No. 1 in Division 4 despite losing two of its final three regular-season games to No. 3 Chassell 60-48 on Feb. 28 and “others” Jeffers 49-47 on Friday.

Carney-Nadeau slipped back into the top five in a tie for fourth with Ewen-Trout Creek. The top three — DB, Pickford and Chassell — were easy choices for the voters, while six teams had between one and five votes.

No Associated Press statewide poll was conducted this week.
