Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team 5th at GLIAC meet

WESTVILLE, Ind. — The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team fought its way to a fifth-place finish with 123 points at the 12-team GLIAC Championships on Saturday afternoon.

Three runners earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors.

Katelyn Smith had the Wildcats’ best finish of 12th place in 22 minutes, 9.5 seconds. Hanna Torvi and Madison Malon were also in the top 20, with Torvi finishing 19th in 22:25.7 and Malon 20th in 22:28.8 to complete the All-GLIAC threesome. This is Smith’s second All-GLIAC award and Torvi and Malon’s first.

NMU’s Paige Saiz finished 33rd (23:09.4), while teammate Meghan Langworthy was 39th (23.15.4), Kimberly Carviou 47th (23:42.4) and Paige Du Bois 50th (23:46.4). Also running for Northern were sophomore Katrina Salmen in 65th, sophomore Anna Kelley in 70th, freshman Emily Sterling in 77th, freshman Morgan Lyon in 84th and sophomore Aubrey Friedrich in 90th.

Grand Valley State won the meet with 17 points and had five runners finish in the top 10 with Allie Ludge taking first (21:23.6). Saginaw Valley State finished second with 89, Michigan Tech third (92) and Wayne State fourth (109).

Westwood High School alum and current Ferris State senior Katie Etelamaki finished fifth in 21:39.3.

The Wildcats compete at the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Nov. 9 in Evansville, Indiana.
