MARQUETTE — Sophomore forward Vincent de Mey of the Northern Michigan University hockey team was named Forward of the Week by the WCHA on Monday.

He had a three-point weekend with two goals and an assist in the Wildcats’ season-opening home split with the Big 10’s Michigan State on Friday and Saturday nights.

De Mey, from Los Angeles, is the early leader in points for NMU while taking seven shots on goal and holding a plus-2 on-ice rating. Nationally, he’s tied for 11th in power play goal with one and 14th in goals per game. He also was an integral part of a power play that boasts a .333 success rate over the weekend, converting on three of nine chances, good for seventh in the country.

Junior teammate Ben Newhouse was an honorable mention for Defenseman of the Week, as was freshman John Hawthorne for Rookie of the Week.

NMU hits the road this weekend to play at Boston University at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday. After that, the Wildcats play the following weekend at Ferris State before returning home for the first four weekends of November, starting against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 1-2. That stretch also includes a home-and-home series against Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech on Nov. 22-23.

Northern is 6-3-1 all-time against Boston University as this will be their first meeting since October 2002 when the teams tied 4-4 at the Ice Breaker Tournament. The Wildcats also defeated the Terriers 8-7 in triple overtime for their only national championship on March 30, 1991, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
