Evelyn Flor, Isabelle Brusilow team up to lead Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team to victory at Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON — Freshman Isabelle Brusilow scored her first collegiate goal with less than three minutes left in regulation to lift Northern Michigan University to a 3-2 victory over Michigan Tech in a women’s college soccer game played Sunday afternoon at Tech’s Kearly Stadium.

Though both teams are members of the GLIAC, this was considered a nonconference game as their contest to end the regular season on Nov. 8 in Marquette will be their conference meeting.

The goal that broke the Wildcats’ two-game losing steak came with 2:33 left after freshman Evelyn Flor found Brusilow with a pass that broke a 2-2 tie.

The host Huskies tied the game twice before the pair of Northern freshmen teamed up for winner as NMU junior Brianna Frontuto made eight saves. She covered for her teammates, who were outshot 14-10 overall and 10-6 on shots on goal.

NMU (3-7) took its first lead quickly as sophomore Caroline Halonen scored her second goal of the season on the team’s first shot of the game just 2:39 in.

But Tech (3-5-1) struck back just about as quickly, needing less than two minutes to forge a 1-1 tie on a shot by Gabby Sgambati.

Much of the first half remained that way until Halonen used a corner kick sent into the box to find senior Gaelin Hirabayashi, who headed it in for a 2-1 lead with a little over 12 minutes left until halftime.

The Wildcats were on their way to the win until the Huskies’ Maisy Snyder scored on a penalty kick with 7:19 left in regulation, retying the score and setting up Flor’s and Brusilow’s late heroics.

Halonen finished with a goal and assist as she took four shots.

NMU remains home at the NMU Soccer Field for four GLIAC matches to finish out this month, starting this weekend with a game at 4 p.m. vs. Grand Valley State and one at 1 p.m. Sunday vs. Davenport.
