Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team falls at Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-1

KENOSHA, Wis. — Despite an early goal by senior Jamie Montgomery, the Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team couldn’t hold on and lost 2-1 at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.

In this nonconference game, Montgomery took a pass from sophomore Caroline Halonen in the 21st minute for a 1-0 lead. It was Montgomery’s second goal and Halonen’s second assist this season.

But the Rangers needed barely 2 1/2 minutes to not only tie the score, but take the lead for the final scoring of the game.

Fifty-two seconds after Montgomery’s goal, the Rangers’ Delaney Benich scored, then in the 24th minute, Kaylee Siegel scored unassisted off a penalty kick.

Halonen finished with five shots while Montgomery and senior Gaelin Hirabayashi had two apiece. NMU outshot Parkside 14-13 and had seven corner kicks to just one for their hosts. In goal, Northern junior Brianna Frontuto made five saves.

In an odd twist of the schedule, the Wildcats hosts Parkside in another nonconference game at 4 p.m. Friday before taking on another GLIAC opponent in a nonconference clash, Purdue Northwest, at 1 p.m. Sunday at the NMU Soccer Field.
