Negaunee Miners tennis team gets past Gwinn Modeltowners, cool weather

NEGAUNEE — The weather conditions may not have been ideal Tuesday afternoon, but that didn’t seem to bother the Negaunee boys tennis team.

The Miners defeated Gwinn 8-0 and swept all four doubles matches without losing a game.

“We’re glad we were able to get today’s meet in,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. “We fought through the weather and carried things over from last week. Jordan (Mason) put a strong effort together and he’s going to provide us a lot of consistency full time at (No.) 4 singles.”

Mason, playing at No. 3 singles Tuesday, had the most competitive match of the meet as he had a good battle with the Modeltowners’ Mason Bockert. However, Mason prevailed 6-2, 7-5.

“That was a really good match,” Gwinn head coach Dan Turecky said. “It seemed like a two-hour match and it went back and forth. It was really tight.”

In the other singles matches, Negaunee’s Chas Kumpula (No. 1) and Corbin Marshall (No. 4) both won their matches without giving up a game (6-0, 6-0) and fellow Miner Will Luke (No. 2) only gave up one game in his two-set victory (6-0, 6-1).
