Northern Michigan University hockey players named WCHA scholars
These student-athletes must be in at least their second year at their school with a 3.5 or better grade-point average either over their past two semesters or three quarters, or have that as their cumulative GPA at their present school.
The Wildcats’ players recognized are seniors Denver Pierce, Adam Rockwood, Atte Tolvanen and James Vermeulen and sophomores Joseph Nardi, Adam Roeder and Caleb Schroer.
Pierce, Tolvanen and Vermeulen are three-time recipients of this honor, while this was Rockwood’s second.
Those seven, along with teammates Philip Beaulieu, Robert Fosdick, Brett Heikkila, Mitchel Slattery, Luke Voltin and Rylan Yaremko, made up the 13 who were named to the league’s All-Academic Team last week.
In all, there were 84 WCHA players who earned the All-Scholar designation, led by Alaska-Anchorage with 14. Fellow Upper Peninsula institutions Michigan Tech had seven recognized and Lake Superior State five.
NMU President Fritz Erickson, who is WCHA Men’s League chairman, congratulated these students.
“On behalf of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, I want to extend our sincere congratulations to all of our WCHA Scholar-Athletes for 2018-19,” Erickson said. “We are truly fortunate to have an exceptional group of young men attending our institutions and competing in our conference.”
NMU’s season came to a close over the weekend with a WCHA tournament semifinals loss at home to Bowling Green State.
The Falcons travel to Mankato, Minnesota, to face Minnesota State at 8 p.m. EST Saturday in the single-game WCHA playoff championship game that determines the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division I tournament.
