Northern Michigan University women going to NCAA regional golf tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — Northern Michigan University has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships East Super Regional.

The Wildcats are one of 12 teams that will compete in the super regional to take place at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. Six individuals from nonqualifying teams will also compete.

Starting on Monday, NMU will compete in a three-day, 54-hole competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not on one of those qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championships national meet.

Fresh off a second-place finish at the GLIAC Championships, the Wildcats feature their first-ever All-GLIAC First Team selection in junior Karissa Guthrie. They also feature a trio of All-GLIAC Second Teamers in seniors Haley Hewer and Avery Rochester and sophomore Caro Els. Rochester is a Marquette Senior High School graduate.

Just two other GLIAC teams also earned berths at the super regional — Grand Valley State and Wayne State.

This is the second straight year the women’s golf team has been selected to a NCAA super regional in the program’s third year in existence. Last year’s squad finished eighth.
