Munising Mustangs, Newberry Indians well represented with Mid-Eastern Football Conference honors

MUNISING — Eight players from Munising and a dozen from co-champion Newberry earned All-Mid-Eastern Football Conference honors, the league announced this week.

It was a Newberry player that earned one of the league’s top awards as senior George Sevarns (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) was named Offensive Back of the Year.

Four Mustangs earned all-conference honors with the balance gaining honorable mention.

For Newberry, seven players were all-conference and five more got honorable mentions.

Two Munising players earned both All-MEFC and honorable mention status.

Junior Anthony Mattson (6-foot, 210 pounds) was all-MEFC at tight end while earning honorable mention at defensive end.

Senior teammate Alec Blank (5-11, 185) was all-conference at defensive back and HM at quarterback.

Other Mustangs all-league were junior Dayne Murk (6-1, 265) at center and junior Matthew Revord (5-10, 170) at linebacker.

Honorable mentions were senior Ryan Pond (6-foot, 240) at offensive tackle, senior Christian Cole (5-8, 170) at running back, senior Maccoy Freeman (6-foot, 215) at interior defensive line and junior Mason Schieding (5-6, 155) at defensive back.

From Newberry, Sevarns was not only Offensive Player of the Year, but was named all-league at quarterback, kicker and punter.

Indians senior Jeff Rahilly (6-foot, 185) was also named three times — All-MEFC at wide receiver and defensive back and honorable mention at return specialist.

Three more Newberry players doubled up. Earning a pair of all-conference nods were senior Sena Parker (6-foot, 250) at offensive tackle and interior defensive line and senior David Carlson (6-2, 180) at guard and defensive end.

Junior Jaylen James was All-MEFC at running back and HM at defensive back.

Other all-leaguers for NHS are junior Wyatt Garrett (6-foot, 190) at center and senior Tyler Blakely (5-9, 190) at linebacker.

HMs went to senior Alex Henry (5-11, 165) at tight end, junior Devon Carson (6-2, 250) at offensive tackle, senior running back Casey Wendt (5-10, 190) at running back, junior Logan McCormick (5-11, 165) at interior defensive line and junior Ethan Edwards (6-foot, 160) at defensive back.

Co-champion Norway had the Defensive Back of the Year in senior Josh Plante, while Bark River-Harris had the Defensive Lineman of the Year in senior Mike Hall.

Lake Linden-Hubbell claimed two of the special awards — senior Peter Heikkinen was Offensive Lineman of the Year and Andy Crouch was Coach of the Year.
