Curt Calovecchi, Dalton Roberts win Greco-Roman titles for Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site

MARQUETTE — A pair of Greco-Roman wrestlers from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site won gold medals last Friday at the 2017 University Nationals in Akron, Ohio.

Two other teammates were silver medalists, three earned bronze and a dozen other NMU-OTS wrestlers finished in the top eight.

The winners were Dalton Roberts and Marquette Senior High School graduate Curt Calovecchi.

Roberts not only won every one of his matches at 59 kilograms (130 pounds), but he never allowed a point as he outscored his opponents 32-0. That included a 7-0 victory in the finals over Mike Fuenffinger of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.

Wrestling at 75 kg (165 lbs.), Calovecchi defeated teammate NMU-OTS teammate Colin Schubert 4-1 in the championship match. Earlier in the tourney, Calovecchi defeated Rowdy Miller of the U.S. Wrestling Club 8-0 in the quarterfinals and Jayshon Wilson of the Marines 4-2 in the semifinals.

Joining Schubert as an NMU-OTS silver medalist was Anthonie Linares at 71 kg (157 lbs.) after he had to face the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, Alex Mossing of Foxfire Wrestling Club, in the finals and losing by technical fall 13-5.

Bronze medalists from NMU were Sam Jones at 66 kg (146 lbs.), Jesse Porter at 80 kg (176 lbs.) and Randon Miranda at 59 kg.

Here are the other top-eight finishers:

Fourth place — Parker Betts, 130 kg (287 lbs.)

Fifth — Jordan Auen, 63 kg (139 lbs.); Austin Morrow, 71 kg; and Cory Fitzgerald, 75 kg

Sixth — Logan Kass, 66 kg; Austin Choan, 85 kg (187 lbs.); and Khymba Johnson, 98 kg (216 lbs.)

Seventh — Kyndall Rutz, 59 kg; and Ali Khan, 71 kg

Eighth — Hunter Kelley, 66 kg; Josh Anderson, 80 kg; and Anthony Riopelle, 98 kg
