MARQUETTE — This week is the second straight busy week of high school tournament action around the area.

Every area team will be in action when boys district basketball tournaments begin. Seven of the area’s 12 teams will play tonight, with the rest getting their start on Wednesday.

It will be a quieter week than normal for girls basketball regionals, hockey quarterfinals and Northern Michigan University teams, since just two girls teams won district titles — Marquette in Class A and Negaunee in Class C — with the Redmen, Miners and L’Anse hockey teams being eliminated last week along with NMU basketball and hockey teams all done in their league playoffs.

Compared to last week, the Marquette boys are in a similar position and L’Anse boys in a completely opposite position from the girls in “nontraditional” districts.

The Redmen play at host Alpena tonight, and if they win, they in effect become the host for the rest of the Lower Peninsula teams in their Class A boys district for games on Wednesday, and with another win, the championship on Friday night.

The Purple Hornets had to travel for their girls district last week, but this week the L’Anse boys play host tonight, and if they win, are also home Wednesday.

Gwinn, Newberry, Superior Central, Republic-Michigamme and Baraga are the area schools hosting “traditional” districts, where all games in the tournament are played at one site.

Area athletic directors always remind us that season passes aren’t good at MHSAA tournament games. So you’ll have to cough up $5 for any district or regional tournament game, still a pretty good deal considering the cost to attend other sporting and nonsporting events these days.
