To the Journal editor:

This November, we will elect two new members to the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education for a 6-year term. Although my name, Monet Borione, is at the bottom of the ballot, it should be at the top of your list. Born and raised in God’s country and a graduate of Northern Michigan University, Marquette is my home.

My son sat on our front porch for a picture on first day of kindergarten at Graveraet. Fast forward–much too fast– 8 years, he is now a middle schooler at Bothwell.

This year we’ve added two young children to our home as a licensed foster family. As a mother, I care about what you care about, keeping kids safe, providing positive experiences and building resilience to help us all cope with stress in a healthy way.

I am a difference maker. I have dedicated my life to encouraging others and to bring about innovation and positive change. As a social worker, I offer hope and compassion to children and families on their darkest days.

I am devoted to “helping the helpers” by providing training and education to teachers, home visitors, and medical/mental health providers. I serve as a trusted advisor with organizations at both the state and local level to review policy, support strategic planning, and strengthen our community.

Many students face intense pressures and strain in their adolescent years. Schools can support mental health by cultivating a sense of belonging through strong relationships and meaningful connections. Evidence shows that these positive experiences promote physical health, well-being and contribute to positive self-worth.

These social and emotional competencies can mitigate the effects of adverse childhood experiences and provide the tools to face challenges in a healthy way.

Acts of division and incivility are the occurring across the country. Children and youth must witness adults demonstrate tolerance, respect, and model appropriate reactions to challenging situations. School communities are made up of professionals, families, and community members.

Diversity does not have to divide. It can inspire creative solutions, identify potential biases, and strengthen decision-making to bring about the greatest good. When elected to the board of education, I will strive to ensure our schools are safe and equitable environments to work, learn, and play. I will support decisions that are all for good and good for all.
