Effort accomplishes much

To the Journal editor:

Project Keep Kids Warm, in its 11th year, is a wonderful story about good things that happen in a community of special people. It began in the Spring when we suddenly faced COVID-19. Plans and events became uncertain with only hope that time would return life to normal. In late Summer the KKW team met to discuss what could or could not be done.

A key factor was the Ishpeming Armory’s closure-to-activities where traditionally collected winter clothing was distributed to families. Next it was determined that the historically generous donations of new or slightly used jackets, snow pants, boots, hats, and mittens would have to be limited to new items.

Then, assuming winter items could be obtained, how to connect with the kids? It would have been easy to conclude that Keep Kids Warm could not be done this year. Except, this is the U.P. where winters are cold, yet hearts are warm, and there is always the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. A plan was laid to keep going.

The Keep Kids Warm team needed to find a way to do two things: collect new winter clothing; distribute it to the kids. A donation campaign was started. The Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE, Republic schools and service organizations were contacted to help make family connections. Drop boxes were set up at the Wesley Methodist and Immanuel Lutheran Churches. The very supportive media explained the new program outline. Soon new winter clothing began to arrive along with a significant outpouring of financial support.

The generous donations were used to purchase items missing in the physical collection to ensure winter clothing requests could be filled. It took some time to get everything started, but it is now wonderful to report that almost 200 children have winter gear for the cold and snowy days ahead. And we have not stopped; donations keep coming in and kids are being helped.

(Checks to Wesley Methodist Church, P.O. Box 342, Ishpeming MI 49849 can still be sent.)

When we think about the Thanksgiving season this is a story over which we can all be thankful. When we look toward Christmas it is time when the joy of giving has deeper meaning. It is time to express sincere thanks to everyone who played a vital role in supporting this community outreach — Project Keep Kids Warm. Thank you and God bless.
