Bergman off base on aid vote

To the Journal editor:

U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman’s official house.gov website states “He is shaking up the status quo in Congress.”

That is apparent most recently by voting no on House Resolution 8035, the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act.

The vote from Bergman, R-Watersmeet, to abandon a world democracy and U.S. ally trying to defend itself against a foreign aggressor is surprising. A threat to Ukraine is a threat to NATO allies, a threat to NATO is a threat to the United States. That is shaking things up!

Further, Bergman’s biography states he “will continue defending the United States from those who want to weaken it, both domestically and abroad.” His recent vote does the opposite.

Luckily, there was strong bipartisan recognition of the threat to U.S. security and the vote passed. The reaction to the success of this bill from a leading Russian Politician Dmitry Medvedev was to “wish the USA with all sincerity to dive into a new civil war … as quickly as possible … and which will finally lead to the inglorious collapse of the vile evil empire of the 21st century.”

Bergman’s vote appeases the Russian political elite — whose stated wish is to see the destruction of the U.S. — is the opposite of his pledge to “defend the United States.”

And it’s inconceivable from someone who served as a lieutenant general in the U.S. Marine Corps.

I question who he is defending.
