LaCombe Field project in Negaunee did take a community

Most of us are familiar with the adage, “It takes a community.” Originally promulgated as part of a national political campaign, the saying has since been co-opted by everyone from bread makers to beer brewers.

That said, it did, in fact, take a community to accomplish a key community goal in the city of Negaunee recently — the renovation of LaCombe Field, a popular softball facility that had fallen into disrepair in recent years.

Renovations to the field were made possible through funding from the Negaunee Little League, the city of Negaunee, and contributions from Negaunee residents, visitors, Negaunee high school alumni and Negaunee business owners.

Understand our point?

According to Mining Journal coverage of the matter, key upgrades to the field include construction of universally accessible dugouts and sidewalks, installation of American with Disabilities Act compliant ramps, and addition of accessible parking spaces.

These improvements provide easy access, stands, concession areas, bathrooms and dugouts.

“LaCombe Field has always been a cornerstone of our community, and these improvements ensure that it remains a place where everyone can come together,” David Nelson, Negaunee planning and zoning administrator said for a Journal story. “We’re thrilled to see this project come to fruition and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.”

So are we.

If ever there was one, this was a community project, right from the start. And when it came to raising the money needed to actually do the work, the community came together and got it done.

This is a shining example of what is possible when people work together.
