Lakosky continues rewriting NMU lacrosse records in easy win

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Throw out the pens and bring in the sharpened pencils — there’s still a lot of erasing and rewriting to be done in the lacrosse record book at Northern Michigan University.
Josie Lakosky continued to dominate in the scoring column and broke more records after the Wildcats piled up the shots in a 22-1 victory at Saginaw Valley State on Sunday morning.
After tying the program record nine days earlier vs. Davenport with nine goals and 13 points, the junior attacker reset those records with an amazing 10 goals and 15 points in NMU’s victory at the Cardinals’ campus, located between Saginaw and Bay City.
She also eclipsed the 80-goal mark for the season after already setting the single-season goals mark in her team’s previous game vs. Grand Valley State, and became just the second Northern player to reach 30 assists in one year.
Also on this day, she set NMU single-season marks for points, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers, adding in five ground balls, 11 draw controls and three caused turnovers.
The only non-goaltender season record she doesn’t have is assists, and that one she is four away from matching with two games left in the regular season — noon Tuesday at No. 3 Indianapolis and 1 p.m. EDT Saturday at Concordia-St. Paul in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Wildcats also locked up second place in the conference as they improved to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. SVSU, in just its second season, fell to 1-12 and 0-6 with its ninth straight loss.
Though it might seem like it, particularly on offense, it wasn’t just Lakosky dominating. Ten other Northern players also scored goals, led by Avery Lorinser and Emily Radke with two apiece, Lorinser adding in an assist for a three-point day.
Additionally, Hannah Jabas, Annabelle Johnson, Vanessa Carrico, Hannah Grimm, Laine Stanton, Evita Weiche, Liliana Fleming and Abby Sisson scored single goals, with Jabas and Johnson also getting an assist.
Taylor Roberts contributed six draw controls and Katelyn Wozney had two, while Sophia Florio had four ground balls and Weiche three with another eight Wildcats getting two apiece and 14 NMU players getting in on that statistical category.
Grimm, Payton Ross and Sophie Langsdale each caused two turnovers as nine Northern players got a notch in that stat, too.
There was no heading the Wildcats, as they dominated total shots 38-3 and shots on goal 29-1, with them also winning draw controls 20-5, ground balls 31-14 and fewer turnovers 22-8.
All that made for a fairly simple day for NMU goalies Lauren Esposito and Hannah Clark as Esposito had her team’s only save as she played the first half and Clark the second 30 minutes.
While the game remained scoreless in the first five minutes, Northern came on hot and heavy after that for the final 10 minutes of the first quarter, scoring five times in 2 1/2 minutes soon after and building an 8-0 lead entering quarter No. 2 and 13-0 at halftime. Lakosky had seven of her goals in the first 30 minutes.
Just before the Cardinals notched their only goal, NMU led 15-0 late in the third.
